When Doug Davidson founded New South Construction Company 25 years ago, he surrounded himself with hard-working, intelligent people who shared the same values and passion for creating successful environments for clients, associates and New South team members. Since its founding, New South Construction has focused on developing leaders in the company, as well as in the industry. That focus can be seen in the strong team that comprises the firm today.
After serving as President of New South for 25 years, Doug Davidson will receive his first title change – to Chairman/CEO. In his new role, Doug will lead the company’s strategic planning, growth and business development, as well as continuing to mentor and develop the next generation of New South leadership. New South is, as it has been for 25 years, one of the most important things in Doug’s life, along with his faith and family, and will continue to be his focus.
Doug’s new role provides continuing leadership opportunities for the New South team, beginning with the naming of Huntly Gordon as President, effective April 6, 2015. Huntly has been a valuable leader of New South since 1992, most recently as Executive Vice President. Leveraging Huntly’s track record in developing individual New South employees into a successful team and growing new markets, his expertise and relationships within the construction industry – as well as his ability to visualize and implement the efficient processes and procedures developed within our operation – his new role ensures the continued success of New South.
Dan Smith has led our financial oversight since 1993, including all areas of Accounting, Risk Management, Human Resources and Administration. Dan will continue to lead New South in all financial areas of our operation as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer and is a vital member of the New South leadership team, working closely with Huntly in continuing to develop the next generation of leadership.
Tom Troutman will continue in the Business Development role in our Foundational Markets. Tom will also oversee our strategic partnerships in these markets including teaming initiatives and mentor protégé relationships with a focus on diversity.
The advancement of Doug and Huntly, along with the continued financial oversight by Dan, makes room for the next generation of New South’s innovative leaders who already play a huge role in the success of the firm. New South has been blessed by its positive trajectory since its founding, and this direction will continue our teams wonderful culture, while expanding its offering to clients as we move forward.

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners voted this evening to approve American Builders 2017 as the construction manager at risk (construction manager) to oversee the construction of the new Atlanta Braves ballpark, which is scheduled to open in early 2017.
American Builders 2017 is a joint venture between Brasfield & Gorrie, Mortenson Construction, Barton Malow Company and New South Construction. Combined, they have more than 225 years of construction experience and have completed more than 330 sports projects, including Target Field in Minneapolis, Coors Field in Denver and Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore.
Douglas County Adult Detention Facility and Law Enforcement Center receives LEED for New Construction certification, making it the first large-scale, new construction adult detention facility and law enforcement center in Georgia to achieve this level of sustainability.
"Though the project was not initiated with a LEED requirement, we are extremely pleased that we were able to collaborate with Douglas County to implement a strong long-term sustainability approach," said HOK in Atlanta Project Manager Michael Katzin. The 1,500-bed detention center is located 25 miles west of Atlanta in Douglasville, Ga., on a 36-acre site master planned for 600,000 square feet of future county office space.
By building on a previously developed site and using sustainable strategies such as sun shading, daylighting, the reuse of rainwater and extensive use of recycled, and environmentally friendly materials, the design helps the building achieve an 19 percent reduction in energy use compared to code. This generates significant cost savings for county taxpayers. The design strategies also reduce water use by 31 percent. Ninety-eight percent of construction waste was diverted from landfills.
Gary Retel, HOK's designer for the project, recommends five simple guidelines for developing sustainable, high-performance facilities. "We always want to create a pleasant environment for the staff, support highly efficient operations, reduce life=cycle costs, optimize the budget and contribute to the creation of a sustainable community," he said.
