Skyland Trail’s J. Rex Fuqua Adolescent Campus was an adaptive reuse of an existing two-story office complex and new construction of a 26-bed wood-framed residential building. The conversion of the existing commercial building presented many challenges tying in and connecting to the existing materials and conditions that sat vacant for many years. While the 2.78-acre site presented several logistical challenges, existing conditions created the largest hurdle for the project team. For instance, approximately 1,500 YD³ of unsuitable soil and rock had to be removed from the site to complete the project while maintaining the expedited schedule. Through multiple crew flow scheduling and open communication and collaboration, this project was ultimately delivered to the client on budget and ahead of schedule.
