This project transformed Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport’s smallest yet most used Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint into one of the most technologically advanced checkpoints in the world—all while keeping it fully operational, according to the project team.
Most notably, contractors installed eight new CT scanners as part of a Checkpoint Property Screening System, which represented the world’s first installation of this technology.
The work performed related to the new CT technology and infrastructure, which would be the test-case for all future security screening equipment to be used by TSA. The agency and the New South-Synergy-led project team needed to figure out this first-ever installation on the go.
Achieving this milestone required the manufacturer’s subject matter experts to be on site for the installation—something that became a major challenge due to the U.S./U.K. travel ban present during the construction period.
The project team overcame this hurdle as well as other challenges—including evolving equipment and project requirements, obtaining local and federal agency approvals and authorizations, and unforeseen conditions—to complete the contract ahead of schedule and under budget.
Additionally, the project team’s emphasis on safety enabled contractors to complete their work with zero recordable incidents and without a lost-time incident.
